Social Sculpture and Connective Practice: Working with Questions
WORKING WITH QUESTIONS: This lecture took place in the Michaelis School of Art [September 2024] - beloved home to many of my early ‘trans-actions’ and experiments in ‘connective practice’ that are, after 50 years, still ongoing!
I was especially excited to share some thoughts about social sculpture and connective practice for a living future, in this place I love so much… where the 'genius loci' under Table Mountain is immensely powerful. Here… where the enormity of mountain and ocean makes visible the human sphere of freedom and responsibility, and new generations work with questions about a ‘living future’.
Joseph Beuys was so excited when we spoke about Cape Town because it marks the place, as he understood it, where the Moon burst from the Earth creating the African Rift Valley between Cape Town and Jerusalem… hopefully something more akin to William Blakes’ New Jerusalem of love and community!
